9th Grade Leadership Conference

Thanks to Jostens and Kate Toman, Burlington High School was lucky enough to host Josten's 7th annual 9th Grade Leadership Conference yesterday. 12 of our students were able to be in attendance (pictured to the left) and they were joined by over 275 students from 23 different area schools. Ed Gerety was the keynote speaker, and he imparted his principles on student leadership, goal setting, and motivation.

Kate started off the conference by introducing a theme for the day - change your words and change your world - which was summed up nicely in this brief video:

Ed then took the stage and delivered a humorous but inspiring lecture that motivated the students in attendance to: be grateful, be respectful, be kind, be clear, and to be responsible.

Ed encouraged the kids to surround themselves with positive people and positive things, to lead by example, to be passionate about something, and that you can always go farther and do more than you think you can.

Thanks again to Jostens for sponsoring and organizing this event, it was well received and truly made an impact on the mindset of many of the youngsters in attendance.

Mentor Tutors are Back for Mid-Term Help!

If you are a student please attend. If you are a parent or teacher please encourage your freshman son or daughter or your students to attend.

Monday January 10th through Friday January 14th FLITE mentors will be in the cafeteria after school from 2:00-3:00. Each day has been designated to focus on a certain subject matter. Mentors will tutor students and explain the mid-term exam process to hopefully help the freshman be more prepared for their first mid-terms exams at BHS.

Monday: Math

Tuesday: English

Wednesday: History

Thursday: Science

Friday: Foreign Languages

We had a great turnout last year, approximately 40 students/day. I would like to have better representation this year, so please come or encourage your freshman to come.

FLITE Mentors Hard At Work

FLITE mentors met today to prepare for their first meeting with students on Monday, September 13th. Homeroom will be extended and mentors will meet with students in small groups within freshman homerooms.

Flite mentors are well trained and excited to finally meet their mentees face to face. The FLITE leadership team of Dan McMahon, Futaba Shioda, Kyle McRobie, Jay Capua, Kaplita Patel, Christina Roberto, Katie O'Connor, and Kierstin Merlino have done an excellent job preparing the mentors.

BHS Activity Fair

Burlington High School will hold it's annual activity fair on Tuesday, September 14th.

We are always telling our students to get involved with the school community, whether it be in athletics or by joining a club - this is a great way for students to see what we have to offer here at Burlington High.

All students, especially freshman, are encouraged to attend the fair and meet members of the many clubs and organizations we have here at the high school and to hear what they have to offer.

I look forward to seeing you all there..

BHS Administrative Team Ready for 1st Day

The administrative team is excited to have staff and students return next week - staff will be back at BHS on August 30th & 31st and students return on the 1st of September for three days before the long weekend.

Yesterday we had a great turnout for our freshman orientation to the tune of about 175 students, not including the 50 plus mentors that came to help out. Thank you again to them for volunteering their summer vacation time.

Reminder: if you weren't able to attend and would like to see the high school before you come on the 1st, please contact my office and I will set a tour up for you or feel free to come by, the building is open every day.

Cashless Lunch System Reminder

Reminder to all students that our school cafeteria operates on a cashless system. Students will need to have their school ID or know their student identification number to purchase food at lunch.

Students/parents can add money to an account by accessing our online system at paypams.com or by entering cash into our reverse ATM located in the cafeteria lobby.

All students will get a photo ID picture taken on the first day of school. While waiting for your new ID from Burlington Studios, current high school students can use last year's ID in the cafeteria. Freshman will be given their ID number in homeroom on the first day of school to use during lunch.

Welcome 9th Grade Students

On Tuesday August 24th Burlington High School will hold freshman orientation from 9:00-11:00. All students are encouraged to attend.

Students will report to the auditorium to hear briefly from myself, Principal Larkin, Associate Principal Sheehan, Guidance Director Mr. Attubato, and our FLITE mentor leaders.

Following this students will be taken on a student led tour of the building followed by refreshments and a chance to socialize in the cafeteria.

If you are unable to attend and would like to visit the school, or have general questions please feel free to contact my office.

BHS Scholarship Night & Graduation

Scholarship night is this Thursday night at 7:00 in the auditorium at BHS. Students who received award letters are asked to report to the auditorium at 6:30.

Graduation is Sunday June 6th at 2:00. Weather permitting the ceremony will be held at Varsity Field and families are allowed to bring as many guests as they like. In the case of inclement weather the ceremony will be held indoors in the high school's wooden gym. If held indoors, each student is given 5 tickets for entry to the ceremony.

Reminder to seniors that graduation rehearsal is this Friday, June 4th, in the rubber gym at 9:00 AM. Please remember that sign out sheets need to be completed and turned in to your guidance counselor before you can receive your cap & gown.

Class of 2010 Graduation

It's hard to believe, but we're already talking about graduation here at Burlington High School. I have created a web page that you can link to on the right hand side of the blog. Please check it for information leading up to our graduation exercises scheduled for Sunday June 6. 2010.

Our first important date will be Wednesday, February 25, 2010 when students will be measured for their caps and gowns. The cost is $17.00, students should bring cash or check made out to Burlington High School.

FLITE Mentoring a Success!

We had a great turnout of about 30 freshman for the first day of our FLITE mid-term mentoring. Mentors were available to help with geometry, algebra, and general mid-term advice. Mentors will be in the cafeteria all week after school from 2:00-3:00 for tutoring, please spread the word for students to attend, I hope to see even more students there tomorrow for English help.

BHS Artist Alumni Day

Thanks to the efforts of Ms. Chang & Mr. Ratkevich of the art department for sponsoring and coordinating our now annual BHS Artist Alumni Day. Former BHS grads, both current college students and college grads, came in to speak on their experiences in college, or now work, and discussed how their background at BHS helped them along the way.

Former students came from many schools including the Maryland College of Art, Harvard University, Syracuse University, Boston College, Boston Architectural College, Endicott College, and Mass. College of Art. Students had backgrounds in many different fields such as graphic design, illustration, art education, sculpture, and animation that they shared with current art students at BHS.

In the pictures above Laura Allegretto, BHS class of 2008 and Jason Yeadon, BHS class of 2005, share their experiences from Syracuse and Mass. College of Art respectively.

Freshman Mid-Term Exam Tutoring

FLITE Mentors (see link to right for information about FLITE Mentoring) will be offering tutoring for freshman students next Monday through Friday in the BHS cafeteria from 2:00-3:00.

Students can come by for general tutoring and mid-term advice any day. However, we will have students who have particular strengths in individual subjects on specific days:

Monday: Math
Tuesday: English
Wednesday: Foreign Languages
Thursday: Science
Friday: History

If just the tutoring isn't enough to get students to the cafeteria everyday next week, we'll be offering free snacks to all who attend.

Burlington High School Student of the Month

Each month we select two students as Burlington High School's students of the month. We select one male and one female based on academic achievement, character, leadership, service, and citizenship (to name just a few criteria). All of our selections are invited to attend a dinner in the spring sponsored by the Billerica Elks and one lucky, and deserving, BHS student will be selected to receive a $500.00 scholarship.
